VICTORY FOR KAREN!!
February 12, 2018
VICTORY!! December 27th, 2017 Karen was paroled from prison. THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS HAPPEN!
I am a New York City bar owner. In October, 2015, I read about Karen in a report on Michigan's aging prisoners who have been eligble for parole for decades. Karen's story was unique: her original trial judge from 1987 has advocated for her parole for over 20 years. And yet, Karen, with a mountain of evidence showing she surpsasses every measure for parole imaginable, is continually denied the freedom she earned behind bars. I was so shocked and moved by the research I did on her case, I flew to Michigan, met Karen in prison and committed to her release. My promise is by August 31, 2017, Karen gets to put her feet in the soil in Crystal, Michigan where her caretaker and her Michigan Dept. of Corrections approved home awaits her. Yes, Karen already has a place to live, a community to support her and so much more.
I am entirely self funding my promise to free Karen Kantzler. I request your assistance to make this happen. Below is where your contributions have been applied to. I take no salary for any of this. 100% of EVERY DOLLAR is used on Karen. Taking this campaign to $5000 will allow for one mass mailing campaign from origianl trial judge to state and local officals in Michigan; creating/boosting content for Karen's posts on Twitter, Instagram & Facebook, ad space in newspapers.
Friday July 7th-July 12th, 2017, I just flew to Michigan to Karen's 50th High School Reunion! I met her incredible former classmates and we spoke about how Karen was the shyest, quietest most soft spoken girl in school. They were beside themself that Karen is still behind bars. "A travesty of justice." I also went to the Carson City United Methodist Church, interviewed the coolest most generous reverend ever. The entire church supports Karen's release. I went into local businesses, even drove up the driveway of the local state senator to have a chat. All to garner support and signatures for Karen's petition.
The last few days, I spent in Birmingham, and met with Norman Lippitt, the original judge who tried Karen's case 30 years ago; spoke with the successor judge who reversed her sentence in 1993, walked into a few newspaper houses to pitch Karen's story -- two of which said they will run her story!! And finally ended in Lansing, adovcating for Karen with the Governor's Legal Division, the Michigan Archdioces, and a stunning attempt to speak with any senator who was not on summer vacation and Attorney General Schuette holding one of Karen's beuatiful crochet blankets (see the facebook and twitter posts for that one (@timeToFreeKaren).
With your help, in 2016, I raised just over $2000.00. That got me to Ypsilanti and Birmingham, Michigan in March 2016, to meet and interview Karen in prison, interview her trial judge, make video clips and set up her social media presence and keep it going, daily. And to return to Michigan in May, 2016 to meet and interview Karen's successor judge, her supporters and former co-workers.
When the judge who convicted you comes to your parole hearing 28 years testifying for your release...its @TimeToFreeKaren.
Karen Kantzler just turned 69 years old and is decades overdue for release.
She has spent the last 29 years in prison completing nearly every educational opportunity and rehabilitation program offered by the Michigan Department of Corrections; and passing all of them with flying colors.
And the judges that tried Karen's case have wanted her free for over 25 years. Yes, 25 years! One even pleaded for her release at her parole hearing in 2015.
She is backed by two churches, a local community, friends & supporters and has a home waiting for her upon release.
Its clear. Its #TimeToFreeKaren.
On behalf of me, Karen, our democracy, THANK YOU for your generosity.
