I am so very fortunate; I have a life filled with blessings:
At the young age of 6 our family moved overseas to Beirut, Lebanon - a place deep in my soul. We were evacuated during the Six Day War in June of 1967 and then moved to Australia, just outside of Sydney. When we returned to the States we made beautiful Westport Connecticut our home. Blessings: a loving family and early years filled with travel and adventure.
I studied at Vassar College, did a most amazing semester abroad at the American University in Cairo (AUC) in Egypt, and graduated with a degree in history from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts.
I settled back into Westport and worked in youth development at the YMCA and their Mahackeno operation.
On our first wedding Anniversary, Theresa and I took the oath; we swore into the US Peace Corps. We served in Jamaica in 1991 and 1992. Theresa was a Medical Social Worker at Cornwall Regional Hospital. I was a youth development worker at the Montego Bay Boys and Girls Club and helped to revitalize "Street School" for the kids who lived in the market.
After Peace Corps we settled into the Greater Boston area; I worked as the Executive Director of the Allston Brighton YMCA. We put much effort into transforming the Gardner School into a community school. We also had land legislated to us and built one of the first 'all inclusive' YMCAs - for people of all abilities and disabilities - in Oak Square.
These past 10 years I have headed up the United Way of Central Massachusetts in Worcester. We annually raise and invest between 5 and 6 million dollars into our community. We were a recipient of a Promise Neighborhoods planning grant and learned place-based community development through that experience. We partner with college students on 'Working for Worcester' and invest in and help build between 15 and 20 recreational spaces annually. We are a founding member of 'One City One Library' and accelerate early literacy and grade-level reading efforts. We are so very proud of a collaborative effort among 7 youth development organizations called 'YouthConnect'. Finally, we have a renewed focus upon out-of-school time for students called 'Summer Strong'. Blessings!
The greatest blessings are our children: Meghan, Erin, and Colin.
So much of my work and my focus was shaped by our service in the Peace Corps. I am now proudly an RPCV and advocate for Peace Corps whenever possible.
