BENEFITING: American Heart Association
EVENT DATE: May 06, 2012
I am running my first marathon and am asking for your help in fighting heart disease. Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in the world and in the US. Everyone knows someone who has suffered from it. In my case, this involves the men in my family. My oldest brother, our father, and grandfather (father's father) all had heart attacks in their mid-40s. Wanting to avoid this family inheritance, I started running.
In January 2011 I decided I wanted to run the OC Half Marathon that May. Not knowing much about running, I just started running a little farther each week. Then in April, I hurt my left Achilles tendon. I tried to rest it, but it wasn't healed in time for the race. After not meeting this goal, I was disappointed, but decided that I was going to do the FULL OC Marathon the next year.
I've been training smarter and harder since then. I've had the support of my coworkers and my running club (South Coast Roadrunners). Of course, my wife has been my biggest supporter and encourager. I'm up to running over 40 miles a week now. Three weeks before the race, I should max out at 50 miles in one week. All the time I spend running is time I don't get to be with friends and family, but I'm hoping that extending my life will make it all worth it.
My goal is to finish the race in four and a half hours.
Please join me in helping to make heart disease a thing of the past by donating. Any amount is helpful. Thank you!
