Tiny Homes For The Homeless

Nearing Completion of Number 1
June 06, 2016
I am the founder of Hearts For The Homeless in Springfield. Mo. We began in 2009 where I worked out of my car handing out items to the homeless.
In 2012 I decided there to be a better way to serve the homeless besides just handing out food so based on personal experience and 16 years as an RN I developed a program where I began working with the homeless to transition them from the street back into functional society. Working by myself with only a few private donations I have transitioned 24 people off the street and only 1 has returned and that was the husband of a husband/wife team.
We have continued to grow and are waiting for the finalization of our 501c3.
Just recently, I was given 4 acres by an organization to build a cottage community and working farm to use to transition the homeless. We also were given a metal building to use in the interim. We currently have established temporary indoor camping for those in the program until we have the buildings in place.
My goal is to build the cottages, have a garden where we not only feed ourselves but the community as well. We will have chickens and small animals on the farm to also use goat milk for soaps, cheeses, etc. We will be green and self sufficient not needing typical utilities. Each cottage will have solar power. The plans are in place and the cost to build an 8x8 cottage is $1674. That is all inclusive and ready to go.
We have volunteers and heavy equipment ready to begin. We just need the money to start the project.
I have about half of a cottage in donations to build the prototype.
This project will change lives which is so necessary in this area as our local community does not have shelters and no plans to build any. We have many barriers as advocates.
I would be grateful for any assistance.
Thank you for reading.
