THE STORY:

Your friends on ChildServ's Auxiliary Board are hosting a Guest Bartender event at Irish Eyes in Chicago this Thursday, July 13, from 7 - 11 p.m. All tips go to help children living in poverty to reach their potential. Can't make it in person, or forgot your cash? You can donate right here to help your favorite Auxiliary Board member win for most tips! Donate specifically to their team, or write a note in your donation to designate whose team your tip is for. Who it helps: For every $2500 we raise, a child living in poverty receives... • An evidence-based curriculum to help a child start kindergarten without the disadvantages that come along with living in poverty • Books, crayons and other early learning tools for growth and development • Connection and transportation to immunizations and yearly checkups • Referrals to community resources for parents; including financial literacy training, job training; affordable housing; and mental health and domestic violence supports • Monthly parent meetings and field trips for children’s social development and parents’ peer support. Meet Two of our Early Childhood Participants: Elizabeth and Marcus are two of ChildServ’s most dedicated clients in our early childhood learning program for children ages 0-3 in the south suburbs. They try to attend every parent forum and practice their activities regularly. Marcus, however, was diagnosed with Williams Syndrome – a congenital condition characterized by medical problems, including cardiovascular disease, developmental delays and learning challenges[1] -- when he was eight months old after Elizabeth noticed that he wasn’t progressing physically. He is now nearly two and goes to the doctor ten times each month in addition to his weekly physical, occupational, developmental and speech therapy sessions. When Elizabeth and Marcus joined ChildServ’s early childhood learning program in May of 2016, Elizabeth asked Shannon, her Parent Educator, for additional help with Marcus’ physical development and finding new baby essentials like diapers and a high chair. The first activity that Shannon introduced Elizabeth and Marcus to during her in-home visits was tummy time to improve Marcus’ neck strength. Elizabeth and Marcus practiced tummy time daily for 30 mins until Marcus could hold his head up on his own. Shannon also brought blocks so that Marcus was able to work on his fine motor skills and a light-up, musical mat to encourage to use his legs and develop leg muscles. Shannon and Elizabeth both agreed that reading to Marcus was important as it promotes speech and builds vocabulary. Elizabeth and Marcus became avid readers, quickly finishing the book that Shannon gave them during every visit. He is now able to say “mom”. During last year’s ChildServ Holiday Gift Drive, Elizabeth asked for a high chair for Marcus now that he was able to sit up by himself and the great progress made with his dexterity. She was ecstatic when she received it, and Marcus’ ability to eat independently has improved his family’s quality of life. Marcus continues to make strides in his development thanks to hard work and persistence, and Elizabeth says that Shannon and ChildServ’s early learning programs have helped her family tremendously: “ChildServ’s program has helped Marcus and me a lot. Shannon provides support when I need it and takes care of my family when we need basic things.”
