Tis the Season to Support a Safe House in Armenia
Organized by: Women's Support Center Armenia
EVENT DATE Jan 15, 2016
Women's Support Center is a non-profit organization that is considered one of the most professional centers dealing with victims of domestic violence in Armenia. We are committed to providing a safe space for survivors of domestic violence and ending violence against women.
Internationally, holidays tend to be the time when domestic violence support centers receive higher numbers of survivors seeking refuge and support. We run one of the two shelters in all of Armenia for women and children survivors of domestic violence. When women come to our shelter, they are fleeing extremely dangerous situations and often bring nothing with them. For this reason, we provide them with basic necessities, such as clothing and hygiene products, in an effort to help them back on their feet and regain their dignity.
We have raised $6,000 for all the welcoming kits for the shelter. For those of you still in the giving spirit, we are looking to provide our shelter with funds to purchase food for our residents in the New Year. To give you an idea of how much this costs, each month we have been spending $420 on food alone, since our shelter has been at full capacity for a while now. For the New Year, we’d like to collect another $5,040 to secure food for the entirety of the year. At our shelter, the women choose what they'd like to eat and work together communally to prepare each meal for themselves & their families. Believe it or not, this small gesture helps empower them, as it gives them greater agency over their lives, something that was taken away from them by their abusers. So, help us provide three healthy meals and snacks to all the women & children by continuing to share our message with your family, friends, & colleagues.
OUR GOAL: PROVIDE THE SHELTER 200 WELCOME PACKAGES FOR THE NEW YEAR AND FUND ONE YEAR OF FOOD.
Our shelter, which has been at full capacity for over three months, may soon need to serve a larger pool of women and children seeking services following the New Year. The Armenian Government does not offer a shelter or any support to NGOs carrying out this work, so we are the lifeline to these women. Every single one of your donations makes a difference in the lives of those at our shelter!
