BENEFITING: LUNG CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Apr 15, 2013
Jaimie and I have been very good friends for a long time, and her mom, Mary was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in 2009 while I was away at school in Ohio. After having high hopes of beating the illness, she passed away March 1st 2010, which also happened to be my birthday. It was a very sad loss for her family, and although I did not know her mother very well, over the years, I have had the pleasure of meeting many of her other family members. They are amazing people and I would love to do something special for Jaimie and the rest of her family that were such a strong support system for her mother while she was sick. Being that Mary's day of passing was my birthday, I have felt something moving in me, pushing me to do something in honor of her. Jaimie and I had decided awhile back to embark on a bike trip from Panama City, Florida to New Orleans and back from April 15th-28th. It was then I decided this would be the perfect opportunity to rasie awareness for and contribute to the research efforts of lung cancer. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality in both men and women worldwide. Risk factors include smoking, environmental pollutants, and heavy alcohol risk. Lung cancer is a malignant tumor that grows in one or both lungs. Lung cancer usually forms in the cells that line the airways and nearby glands. In lung cancer the changing of normal cells into cancerous cells usually happens over a period of years. Early detection is critical, most lung cancers are diagnosed at a late stage. The reason for this could be due to the nations research investment is under-funded and lags behind other cancer research funding. Studies have found positive benefits recently from annual CT scans as opposed to chest x-rays. Because of this need for research funding and strategies for better treatments and screening, we have chosen to benefit the Lung Cancer Research Foundation. Your donations will support the efforts of a great cause that looks to improve the quality of life for lung cancer patients! Your support, no matter how small will make a huge impact and will really make this 700 mile bike trip special!
