Together we can bring hope for better life!
SPEAKER: Mayuen Mayuen DIING - Programme Coordinator
Why invest in Agriculture?
Thank you all for being here today and I hope that you are enjoying yourselves. I wanted to take a few minutes to explain why we are all here.
Did you know that an estimated 6.01 million (50% of the population) people are severely food insecure in June-July 2017, compared to 5.5 million (45% of the population) people in May 2017? This is the greatest number of people ever to experience severe food insecurity (IPC Phases 3, 4 and 5) in South Sudan.
Even more startling, Global Acute Malnutrition Weight-for-Height (GAM (WHZ)) prevalence above the WHO emergency threshold of 15%, with a peak of 26.1%. Widespread fighting, displacement and poor access to services, disease outbreaks, extremely poor diet (in terms of both quality and quantity), low coverage of sanitation facilities and poor hygiene practices are the key drivers of the high levels of acute malnutrition across South Sudan. Every year in July food insecurity level in South Sudan (Former NBeG- Northern Bhar el Ghazal) is always intense. However, WFP has fill gap this year by distributing food (GFD- General Food distribution) which include sorghums, Beans, oil etc. to target beneficiaries.
As part of this commitment, (Relief Aid for Disaster Reduction Agency -RADRA) is implementing project “ Support 60 farmers in Aweil ”, this project will educate 60 women and men to make the transition from hesitant, early learners to confident in agriculture. They will be able to meet the needs of their family and also gain access to a long-term livelihood solution.
I know that the journey we about to take doesn’t begin to compare with the challenges that food insecure household and their families endure. So, for each step we take and for every time we think, we can’t possibly go any farther, I’ll be humbled… recognizing the sacrifice you taking on behalf of vulnerable people. I think of those who have lost the battle and of those who fight fearlessly every day against hunger.
Please help us to make better life for vulnerable people! Be one of the first people to make a donation $10, $25 here (https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/support-60-farmers-in-aweil/ )!
