THE STORY:

THE STORY:

Our Good Friend Andy B. has a disability called Spina Bifida. He  is in a wheel chair. We plan to build him an accessible home.

If there is a worthy cause on the planet this cause takes the cake!

Let's Talk About Andy B:

Andy B was born and raised in the small town of Hanover, Maine. Born with a condition called Spina Bifida back during a time in history when there was very little medical knowledge and/or treatment for this degenerative, disabling condition causing him paralysis from the waist down.

*Spina bifida is defined as any abnormal development of the bones of the spine that display a typical pattern, with or without the involvement of the brain, nerves or covering of the nerves (meninges). It is the most common congenital spine abnormality. The term spina bifida covers a range of malformations that always include deformities of certain parts of the vertebrae, the spinous process and vertebral arch.*

When Andy was a small boy he could walk and play like any young boy. During his school years he became dependent on crutches. As time moved on the disabling effects of his condition took its toll. Andy now depends on a wheel chair to get around.

Andy is a very humble, quiet man who is also a shining star for his community. He's an active outdoors man, a brother, an uncle, a friend, a gardener, a handy man, a lumberjack, a volunteer, and a mentor in the lives of many. He gets out there and gives back every day. Whether he is mowing lawns for his neighbors or fixing a car for a friend, he is always giving a helping hand, contributing a kind word or inspiring others.

For the past 25 years Andy has been a volunteer for Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation. Over the years he has been a mentor and ski instructor for thousands of program participants.

Presently Andy resides in his big old family farm homestead. Built sometime in the late 1800's or early 1900's; it was once listed on the registry of historical properties. Over the years the condition of the old homestead has declined to the point that Andy could not possibly keep up financially or physically with the up keep and maintenance necessary. The homestead is just falling apart. Most of the house is not accessible for him and his wheel chair. Just to get inside he has to crawl up the stairs because there is no ramp for his chair. The counters are to high when he tries to do dishes or brush his teeth. The door ways to narrow for his wheelchair...During the winter most of the rooms are closed off with plastic to conserve heat within the three rooms he lives.

To this very day the home has nothing more than a wood stove for heat.

With that being said let me paint a picture for you.

Imagine yourself being paralyzed from the waist down. Get up on your four wheeler with a safety helmet and a chain saw in hand; go find a big tree; now get off the four wheeler and crawl on the ground beside the tree with your safety helmet and glasses on; now proceed to start up your chainsaw and cut the tree down. (Be very aware that you are sitting on the ground; there maybe nowhere to go if the tree twists when it falls.)  OK, now drag the tree back to the house. Cut it, split it, and then stack it in the wood shed. Continue this activity until you have enough wood in the wood shed to heat your house for the winter. (It takes about 8 cords) When that is all finished go back out; cut and split enough wood for your friends and family too...

When the cold weather arrives you will now have to keep the wood stove going 24 hours a day to keep the house warm and so as to prevent the water pipes from freezing.

Now you have a picture of a day in the life of Andy B.

This man is unstoppable!

Despite the challenges Andy B faces every day of his life you will never hear him complain. He faces everyday with strength, the willingness to achieve great things, and a positive attitude!

There is no one more deserving on this planet than Andy B!

Help us help Andy.

Contribute every penny you can and help us change the life of one man who has done so much to help change the lives of so many others!

Our sibling, our friend, our inspiration, Andy B...

We appreciate you for taking the time out of your busy life to contribute to this very worthy cause. Thank You!
