March 01, 2017

As many of you donors know by now, last Sunday I completed my marathon in Tokyo. It was a lovely, sunny day. The time was 3:08:30. While I was See More

EVENT DATE Feb 26, 2017

THE STORY:

The earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan’s northeast coastline on March 11, 2011 and killed 16,000 people, was one of the most devastating natural disasters in history.

Coming from Italy, a country so dramatically vulnerable to catastrophic earthquakes, I am dismayed at the thought of the long-term consequences on the victims, their families and their communities.

I recently read that more than five years after the March 2011 earthquake, thousands of families are still unable to return home: 170,000 people are either housed in temporary or rented accommodation or have moved to restart their lives in others parts of the country. These figures are staggering. Needs are still huge.

Children are always the most vulnerable victims of an earthquake. Many of them lost their parents due to the disaster. Their lives are changed forever.

We cannot allow ourselves to forget them. In these times of uncertainty and fear, I want to give a message of hope.

On February 26, 2017, just days before the earthquake's 6th anniversary, I will run the Tokyo Marathon. It will be my 37th marathon. I will run for a cause.

My campaign will support the children victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

All the funds collected through my campaign will go to a foundation, the Recovery Support for the Great East Japan Earthquake, which will send them directly to organizations located in the three affected prefectures to support educational programs in those areas.

Please take a look at the photo in the top left corner of Mr. Shingo Sasaki and his children at the Osawa Nursery School (photo credit: Japanese Red Cross). The school had been destroyed by the Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami, and has now been rebuilt.

Much more needs to be done. The money of this campaign will be used to give children like these a healthier life and better learning opportunities.

I am appealing to all my friends to support me in my efforts: any contribution will help me meet and exceed my goal! All children have the right to have hopes and dreams, and we must help them achieve them.

Thanks.
