SLAMDiabetes will host their 6th Annual Vermont Summer Classic Wiffle® ball tournament on Friday, June 24th through Saturday, June 25th 2016 at the Little Fenway complex in Essex Junction, VT. This past June, at the tournament’s 5th anniversary, participants generated $80,000 in support of those battling Type 1 diabetes (T1D).
T1D is a lethal, life-changing autoimmune disease for which there is currently no cure. Until there is a cure, SLAMDiabetes is playing Wiffle® ball to change the game up on T1D. The 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation is dedicated to improving the lives of children and adults trying to manage their T1D, which is not an easy task by any stretch of the imagination.
To put things into perspective, if someone is diagnosed with T1D at age 5, he or she will have to administer roughly 24,000 insulin injections just to reach the age of 18. That is 5 shots per day. Now, add that number to the nearly 40,000 finger pricks (that's right, another needle) that the same 18-year old has inflicted to check his or her blood sugar levels. These are just two of the what seems like endless areas that people with T1D have to focus on to somehow "manage" a normal life...but that's what we need to realize. People with T1D are not living a normal life and they need help!
SLAMDiabetes’ Wiffle® ball tournaments have become a fun way for people with and without this disease to come together, raise awareness about T1D, and simply have a great time. The $80,000 raised at this year’s Vermont Summer Classic helped fund 31 camperships for Vermont’s first ever over-night diabetes education camp. At these camps, children with T1D learn they are not alone in their fight against T1D and are provided helpful resources to make their lives a little easier.
So, get in the game and help SLAMDiabetes out of the park. Eighteen (18) team spots are available, but these will go quickly as many teams are returning from last year. Teams are guaranteed 3 games, with an opportunity to make the playoffs. Players and fans can enjoy live play-by-play announcers, music, concessions, raffle prizes, classic backyard games, and the signature Home Run Derby event.
