“If you don’t like the way the world is, you change it. You have an obligation to change it. You just do it one step at a time.”
– Marion Wright Edelman
“A Step at a time” is dedicated to my mother-in-law, who is recovering from a serious brain aneurysm. Over the course of a year, with family support and her own persistence, she went from being unable to walk or speak to recovering 90% of her cognitive and physical abilities. The rehabilitation staff called the recovery a miracle! She now enjoys playing mahjong, brush painting, reading the horoscope, and periodic walks (using a walker).
Similarly, taking a step at a time, we can meet the challenge of ending elder social isolation! The Walk will raise awareness of this important issue and raise funds to support FriendshipWorks’ time-tested program of matching volunteers to meet the needs of isolated elders. A step at a time, FriendshipWorks volunteers are making a tremendous difference in the lives of elders in Boston and Brookline! Volunteers have provided over half a million hours of donated care to 25,000 Boston-area seniors since FriendshipWorks’ founding in 1984!
Please walk with me, join or sponsor my team! With your support and participation in FriendshipWalks, we can take major steps to harness the power of friendship and end elder social isolation!
