BENEFITING: Jack H Marston II Melanoma Fund
EVENT DATE: Oct 22, 2017
When I met my wife, I didn't know I would be meeting my lifesaver as well. Within an hour of meeting my wife she was putting sunscreen on my back and talking about me going to a dermatologist. My wife lost her father to Melanoma and it is something very close to her. Running was something I picked up shortly after I met my wife, because it was something we could do together. I NEVER wore sunscreen until I met my wife on the beach and I was always outside. She told me to go to the dermatologist for a check. They found pre-melanoma on my first visit and ended up finding stage 2 melanoma on my scalp on a subsequent follow up! That was a wake up call for me. Fortunately for me, it was early stages and I was able to have it surgically removed with clear margins and no further treatment! Needless to say, this is a disease that has affected my life in many ways. Running is something that Brittany and I enjoy doing together, so when we decided to register for the marathon (Marine Corps Marathon) I thought, what better way to do it than to raise awareness for melanoma as well. Finding Jacks Fund was a blessing! Brittany and I are very excited to help raise money for a topic we are very passionate about and also one that can help save lives. I would love to have you help in supporting me in this journey, mile for mile and dollar for dollar.
Fighting Melanoma Every Step of the Way
Join us in support of an incredible group of athletes who have chosen to make their marathon experience more meaningful by raising funds to fight the deadly disease melanoma. We invite you to help them reach their goals and join the the fight!
Our Vision: "We envision a world where every adult and child is aware of the risks of melanoma and takes preventative measures; where those who suffer from melanoma receive comfort and healing; and ultimately, where every case of melanoma will be completely curable."
2017 Goal: Raise $50,000 for melanoma research and awareness programs.
- Melanoma is the most underfunded of all cancers by federal and private agencies.
- Early detection makes melanoma highly curable, but it is the least screened cancer.
- People find their own melanoma more frequently than doctors do and melanoma detection is not a training requirement for most medical disciplines.
Jack’s Team: Established in 2005 when a group of athletes came together to join the fight against melanoma. Jack's Fund has been an official marathon charity for 12 years and disbursed over $300,000 to research. We invite athletes of varied experience from all stages of life to join Jack’s Team.
Our success stems from a unique Strength, Passion and Focus (SPF) each member brings to the team.
