Hey everyone! Thanks for taking the time to read! For those of you that know me (and follow me on FB) you have probably noticed that I frequently post things relating to DIPG (Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma). Until about a year ago, I had never heard of DIPG and the horrific prognosis relating to these four letters. DIPG is a brain tumor found in the brain stem that affects (mostly) children, also the leading cause of death of brain tumors in children. The survival rate for DIPG is LESS THAN 1%. Once diagnosed, the median survival time is 9 months. The standard of care for this cancer has not changed in 40 years and our government is doing zero to help any advancements. Approximately 4% of the taxpayer-funded National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) annual budget is directed toward pediatric cancer. Not 4% for DIPG, not 4% for pediatric brain tumors… 4% for ALL of childhood cancer! Why is this important to me?A five year old beautiful blonde boy named Tommy, from Hudsonville popped up on my FB feed one day and I started reading the story. Though I didn't know Tommy or his family at the time, he immediately took over a place in my heart. I'm not sure if was the infectious smile that I saw in every picture of Tommy, or if I related to him and his family because he was so close in age as Miles, maybe both. Whatever it was, it stuck. I had the fortune of meeting Tommy shortly before he passed away, just 11 weeks after being diagnosed. I will never forget our short meeting and the giant smile on his face, even though he wasn't able to speak. This is something that will stick with me forever. To make a very long story short: We need to help. On September 23rd Miles and Jovi will participate in the 'Fun 1 mile course' for kids to raise money for this foundation. Because they can't type, they have asked me to write this for them. This could very easily be our family or someone close that we love. I know we all have our own causes and missions that we are passionate about as well as bills, kids to feed, houses to pay for etc. We are asking you to donate to our fundraiser!!! Anything helps! You can skip that Starbucks tomorrow or maybe that extra drink at the bar tonight :) You can donate now, or donate later, or both!!! Please do what you can! We appreciate you and thank you in advance!!! Love you all!
