Why Tom Runs
I run for a few reasons. I like the solidarity of the ultra community. I like the self-deprecating humor when running with friends. I like the challenge. I like the new places it takes me. But I really love the feeling of accomplishing something that I never even knew was possible.
I support LearnToLive because the possibility of something that was not previously obtainable definitely feels like something worth running for!

In May of 2012 Tom Cripps is running The North Face 100® China. This race is the most challenging race in The North Face 100® series and features 55% of trail and hilly paths with elevation changes of 950 meters. It starts from the Juyongguan Great Wall and ends at the scenic Ming Tombs Reservoir which is the lowest point of course at an altitude of 100 meters. Not only is Tom running the race, which to many would seem impossible, crazy and just out right mad, but Tom is running to raise money for LearnToLive.
LearnToLive is a healthcare initiative based in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Its mission is to provide primary health care and early interventions to the people of North Sulawesi who are unable to travel or pay for healthcare. Due to the lack of healthcare access many people in these villages live with chronic life threatening illness that if diagnosed are easily treatable.
LearnToLive will provide primary treatment, teach preventative education, and demonstrate sustainable practices as well as establish continuing care with local healthcare professionals. This will be done through four travelling health clinics which will provide health screenings to an estimated two thousand people in three weeks. During these screenings LearnToLive will assess and detect many of the major illnesses found in the region such as malaria, tuburculosis, diabetes, gastronenteritis and infant mortality. The LearnToLive medical team will be working alongside Indonesian healthcare workers to ensure crucial follow-up care throughout the year.
These services will empower the individuals of North Sulawesi to use their resources to development healthy lifestyle practices, enabling them to live long and healthy lives.
A secondary goal is to inspire and create a learning environment for international healthcare workers so they may bring their experiences of Indonesia back to their country of origin and be better healthcare workers. LearnToLive is excited to take their first team of health care workers to North Sulawesi Indonesia in July of 2012.
All donations will go directly to fund the 2012 LearnToLive Healthcare Initiative in North Sulawesi Indonesia.
