BENEFITING: CHILDRENS HOME OF YORK
EVENT DATE: Nov 27, 2014
SPECIAL THANKS TO THE WALTON FAMILY AND NAPA FOR THEIR VERY GENEROUS SPONSORSHIP OF TOM'S TURKEYS.
Tom Schonauer was many things to many people. A loving husband. Amazing father. Generous son and brother. Trusted pediatrician. Adored grandfather. Loyal friend. Avid golfer. Valued advisor. Life of the party. And yes, a complete and utter goofball in the process.
But most of all, he was loved.
Tom passed away in January 2014 from a glioblastoma brain tumor. When unexpected tragedy like this strikes, you do one of two things: You can either wallow in the unfairness of life, or you work to make some small difference in the world.
In November 2013, while Tom was battling the final stages of this insidious disease, his family gathered together at Thanksgiving and agreed to participate in the YMCA 5K Turkey Trot in York, Pennsylvania. He was bedridden, but those of us with two perfectly good working legs decided we’d run (or walk) in his honor. Because we could. And the smile that this effort brought to his face sealed the deal for us – we would make this an annual family tradition. Something we’d use to honor his memory year after year and help keep his amazing spirit alive.
Before his illness, Tom served for many years as a Board Member for the Children’s Home of York (CHOY), an organization dedicated to empowering kids, strengthening families in times of need, and enriching local communities. He loved this work, and the feeling that he was making a real difference in the lives of the very children he served as a pediatrician. That’s why it seems only fitting that we make CHOY the focus of our Turkey Trot fundraising effort this year.
So on Thursday, November 27, “Tom’s Turkeys” will once again be hitting the streets of York, PA in various degrees of running preparedness. We certainly won’t be the prettiest team out there. Or the fastest. Or even the most organized. But we WILL be united in our effort to raise at least $3,000.00 for CHOY. Because what better way to honor Tom, and his passion for helping children and families in their time of need?
If you’ve read this far, you obviously knew Tom and are part of our extended family now – which means you totally get what this effort is all about. So we thank you in advance for your support. For understanding the importance of remembering Tom’s work. His legacy. His love. Your tax-deductible donation, no matter how large or small, is evidence of the difference we're making here together.
