Youth On Guard

THE STORY:

To honor our veterans through a reenactment of the Changing of the Guard at a life size replica of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a group of young people (Civil Air Patrol Cadets) will be using thier spring break to travel to visit Arlington National Cemetery as part of thier preparation.

Your donation will help send this group of young cadets to Arlington.

This is an opportunity to instill in the cadets the sense of patriotism, dedication, precision, gratefulness, and respect necessary for the maintenance of the correct mindset during the ceremony.

Today's youth need the influence of positive role models. They need to know that character and patriotism are still esteemed and that pursuing both qualities is worth their time and effort.

You are invited to come and witness the results of your investment on Memorial Day Weekend, 2015 at Floral Haven Cemetery, Broken Arrow, OK. Ceremonies start at 1pm, Saturday, May 23rd, and continue 24 hours a day, rain or shine, until the afternoon of Monday the following week.

2015 marks the 21st anniversary of the re-enactment. Cadets train 120 hours during the five months of January through May. A team of guards is then selected based on character and precision.

There is much to say about this ceremony, but perhaps a former guard said it best reflecting on his visit to the Tomb of the Unknown:

“Footsteps echo across the respectfully silent courtyard. Movements, watched thousands of times in pictures and video, enacted before my eyes. With vigilant attention, the guard marched down the plaza, a standard of perfection maintained by an attitude of honor. These are the characteristics that I took away and put into practice during my 5 years as a member of the Starbase Guard of Honor, striving to honor and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.                                                                       Duty, Honor, Respect                                       These three hallowed ideals, even now, remain an integral part of my life."

We re-enact to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, to assure their loved ones that they did not die in vain, to express gratefulness and respect to veterans, and to support our soldiers today. A soldier never dies until he is forgotten, tomb guards never forget.

If you would like your donation to be tax-deductible, write and send a check payable to: OK Wing Civil Air Patrol, and designate that it is for the Washington, D.C. trip.

If you would like to support a specific cadet on his or her trip, specify that on the check as well.
