Dear Friends, During this t…
Dear Friends,

During this time of Thanksgiving, I am particularly thankful for my experience this past summer. While I have shared this summary with many of you already, I want to make sure that each of you who contributed to my fundraiser knows how much I appreciated your support.

When I signed up for the trip, I thought my ride could inspire others to donate to a great cause, so I created my CrowdRise campaign. While biking, however, I found that I became inspired every time I thought of my fundraiser or received an update. Whenever I doubted my abilities or questioned my decision to start the American Challenge, I would remember all of my supporters and my passion for biking would be re-ignited.

We pedaled through all weather and in temperatures ranging from 60 to 125º Fahrenheit. After climbing to an elevation of 10,856 feet at Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado, we descended into Los Angeles, cruising down Santa Monica Boulevard through Beverly Hills.

When we started the trip, we dipped our tires in the Atlantic Ocean in Beaufort, SC. It was the first day and we were all still very timid, so we carefully touched the tires to the water. By the end of the trip, we had created such lasting friendships and had grown so tight-knit as a group that we all sprinted to the ocean with our wheels in our hands and dove into the frigid water of the Pacific Ocean.

While riding, the 14 of us slept in a variety of settings. In many towns, gracious citizens opened their churches, made us dinner, let us use their facilities to wash off, and allowed us to sleep inside. Mayors of towns opened their recreational centers and firehouses for us to sleep in and use the facilities. Even local residents allowed us to sleep in their backyards and grilled barbecues for us. Other times, we slept in campgrounds or motels.

The trip was unsupported, meaning that we carried all of our clothes, food, tents, and cooking supplies on the backs of our bikes. It was also unplugged, so I had no electronics to entertain me along the way. The only device that I was allowed to have with me was a portable camera.

Since my journey ended, I have been busy. I was honored at the Literacy Coalition’s kick-off reception for the annual Loop the Lake race, a race around Lake Okeechobee. As a final tally, we’ve raised $9,775 for the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County. This accounts to nearly 98% of my $10,000 goal!

From the bottom of my heart,
Thank You.
