BENEFITING: Habitat for Humanity of Michigan, Inc.
EVENT: Mighty Mac Swim 2016
EVENT DATE: Sep 05, 2016
“Get busy living.”
That’s the motto in our house, and we do our best every single day to live each day to the fullest – filled with love, laughter, and good old hard work. Swimming the Straits is something that I am SO excited to be a part of, and can’t wait to do! Being a part of this race means so much to me and my family. We preach “paying it forward” to our 6 children and try our best to lead by example in our home. Participating in a race that will benefit Habitat for Humanity makes it something to be proud of on a whole different level. As a mother to miraculously healthy quadruplets, I can respect those who understand overcoming adversity, coping with difficult conditions, and persevering through the unexpected as part of our life journey. This is an opportunity to pull it all together and challenges us within the race community to step up and help others in need, while fulfilling our quest to tackle the next exciting race endeavor.
My name is Tonya Lewandowski, and my husband and I are raising our family of 8 in beautiful Traverse City, Michigan near the shores of Grand Traverse Bay and Lake Michigan. I grew up in Marine City, Michigan swimming the St. Clair River - so I am no stranger to the power of a current - and swimming with freighters! Around age 8, I began actively swim racing and my love for water truly began. While racing through high school, I also became a life guard on the St. Clair River and somehow (unexpectedly) found my ability to stay calm when all chaos broke loose in open dangerous water situations. When I chose to pursue my engineering undergrad at Michigan Technological University up in the far reaches of the U.P., I grew to love the Straits – the halfway point from my home and always full of unexpected conditions. I continued racing through college and, over time, morphed into a triathlete, as so many of us swimmers do. I have raced in many open waters, but none as beautiful as our Great Lakes! Now, at age 39, I have chosen a career path that allows me to think about creative ways to protect these great waters every day. With my engineering career focused on water resources, I work hard to protect our beautiful Great Lakes. I chose this path to protect what I love, what our family loves, and respect the beauty of our fresh waters in a whole new way.
Racing the Straits on behalf of Habitat for Humanity will be an experience I will never forget and I THANK YOU for helping me reach my fundraising goals! I appreciate your contributions as I look forward to this amazing endeavor.
