Ashley Nelson wrote -As young boys, Mitch and Blake Nelson were mischevious, active, wild little guys who likely left a trail and impression (hence the nick name) wherever they went, and on whoever they met.
This didn't change as they got older and the relationsihps and memories they created with people in their lives truly did attest to what special guys they were. Mitch passed away in 2002 at the young age of 19; just starting his college career and beginning the next stage of his life. Blake passed away in 2009 at the age of 28. He had served a few years in the US Army and was based in Colorado at Fort Karson. He loved what he did and loved serving his country. He had a passion for it and was looking to make it a career.
After experiencing such loss I have found so much peace and healing through endurance running and triathlon. I don't really know where I would be without the blessing to go out and run, bike, swim, and push myself to new limits.
Having a brother in the military gave me a much different perspective on what others sacrifice for me every single day. I want to give back to those who have suffered their own losses in order for me to do what I love and live in this beautiful country.
I will be racing the British Columbia, Canada Ironman on July 27th in honor of my brothers, Mitch and Blake, the Tornado Brothers themselves. All money raised in this effort and honor will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.
