I will never forget the day I fell in love with Big Class. It was the summer of 2013 and I had just moved to New Orleans. I was wandering around checking out some openings for Second Saturday and stumbled upon the Big Class studio. While walking around the studio, I was in awe of what I was seeing. Their words and illustrations blew my mind- it was some of the most honest, self-expressive student work I had a seen yet, and I am a teacher. I was so happy to see this creativity- the energy coming out of these books was palpable in the room. When I walked out, I continued to think about what I read and felt compelled to join the magic of Big Class. Something special that struck me was that these incredible pieces of work were not just being shown, but published in beautifully constructed books. I could tell that the work of these kids was valued. After that night, I decided that this would be an organization that I would support. Now in it's 5th year, Big Class has created opportunities for more than 3,000 local youth to write, to be supported in their writing, and to publish their work. We operate from the belief that reading gives people access, but writing gives them power—and that once a child becomes a published author, they never look at a book the same way again. Help us sustain the Pizza Poetry Project- one of our very special projects with New Orleans youth! I would really REALLY appreciate if you could donate! Twenty dollars would be ahhh-mazing, but really anything is something!! I used to throw a pizza party for donors in New Orleans, but I have since moved to Los Angeles. I will think of SOMETHING special for you! Or just thank you a thousand times! I appreciate your support. This organization and the work they are doing is very dear to my heart.
