"Tot Lot" Park Resurfacing & Maintenence Project
Organized by: Anna Bechtel
The "Tot Lot" (as it is affectionately known to parents and caregivers of the under-5 set) is a community supported playground located in the Fairmount/Spring Garden neighborhood. It has fallen into disrepair and had no formal plan or funding to maintain it for the future. The Spring Garden Community Development Corporation, along community members, has organized a revitalization project to repair safety hazards, improve the existing structures, plant trees & flowers, and plan for future maintenance of the park. Initial improvements were funded by the Spring Garden CDC, but continuing the project requires additional funding. Pictures of the work done so far can be seen here, as well as the plan for installation of a permanent playground surface. Additionally, there will need to be funds for periodic replacement of the sand in the sandbox, plantings, and general maintenance. The work done so far includes: new mulch, new fencing for the park, a new sandbox with cover and sunshade, a new bench, tree and flower plantings, new signage, and removal of old and hazardous structures and equipment.
There has been some debate about the safety of the two concrete turtles located in the play area. Please use the comments section to let us know if you think they should stay, go, or you have some other solution.
