BENEFITING: Dwankhozi Hope

EVENT DATE: Feb 23, 2013

Bradley MacLean

THE STORY:

To build awareness of poverty in Africa and raise money to support a rural school in Zambia through the nonprofit Dwankhozi Hopemy brother, Marc, and I will particpate in what's considered one of the toughest events on the planet - the TOUGH MUDDER.

Taking place in Arizona and joined by our good friend, Rob Garza, we will push ourselves through a 12-mile obstacle course designed by British special forces to test what we're made of and bring attention to those in need.

Having traveled to this proverty-striken community in rural Zambia, I've seen firsthand the struggles they persevere through each day. Their obstacles are real, tougher, and lasting.  Watch this video to understand a day in the life of a child in rural Zambia and read more about the story of Dwankhozi below.

Our goal is to raise $4,000.  All proceeds will go directly to the Dwankhozi Hope organization and the programs listed below.

As an added benefit, if we meet our fundraising goal prior to Feb 23rd, Marc & I will shave our heads bald!!  :-) .  My wife nor my employer will like this, but we committ in the spirit of pushing ourselves outside our comfort zones for the benefit of something bigger than ourselves.

Donate today to show your support! Click here to view a list list of programs and projects planned by Dwankhozi Hope in the coming year.  Let me know if you would like your donation to any one of them specifically.

Read Dwankhozi Hope's story below to learn more about this tremendous organization I've been privilaged to be part of since 2009.

In 2006, my brother, Matt, and his wife, Beth, helped start a non-profit called Dwankhozi Hope with the goal of supporting a school in rural Zambia, a country in Southern Africa. They were inspired by the capabilities, commitment, and dedication of the parents and the community leaders to provide a better life for their children.  They observered their intrinsic values and required skills to forge ahead and start a school for their children but they did not have the necessary resources to sustain, much less grow the institution. With only 9 volunteer teachers and 500 students; no supplies or even a school building, learning was nearly impossible. Many of the children were orphaned and suffered from various illnesses caused by poverty but the school offered an opportunity and hope for a better life. Matt, Beth, and many other committed hearts came together, forming Dwankhozi hope to provide the resource and support needed to give them a boost.

Inspired and looking to do something bigger than myself,  I joined the organization in 2009 as their "IT Guy".   Having the privilage to visit the Dwankhozi community, I've seen firsthand the struggles of this community but also the amazing progress they've made partnering with Dwankhozi Hope.

The underlying philosophy of Dwankhozi Hope is to empower the community to build this school for their children creating a partnership that leads to opportunity through education. The mission is fundamentally relational as we look to walk along side them in this endeavor. Since the beginning of this partnership, we have witnessed tremendous progress in the community and the school. In the past five years we have been able to support the construction of multiple school buildings and the provision of critical school supplies. We also led an effort to provide safe clean water to the community and improve sanitation systems to the school. We recently had a team return from a medical mission trip to the school as well as a recent trip to build a computer lab for the teachers, set up reading rooms, and begin to research new agriculture techniques to improve food production in the surrounding villages.

Brad, Even though you foolishly didn't vote for me, I would like to support your honorable cause by donating. But unlike the person you did vote for, I give my money away....not the tax payers. :-) 4 years ago
