THE STORY:

Dawn Spoon wrote -

My name is Dawn Spoon. I'm a hospice nurse with two great passions. One is the care hospice can provide patients and their loved ones at the end of life. The other is finding new ways to challenge myself – lately, through cycling. July 8 – 16, I will be combining these two passions on an adventure that will take me all the way from Mackinac City to Stevensville, MI, a distance of 423 miles! I am taking this on in order to raise funds and awareness for hospice care, and to challenge myself for a great cause. Join me for the ride (or part of it) or become a sponsor to help people get the care they need. Expert cyclists, amateurs, all are welcome – no matter what your level of expertise, this is not a race, it's meant to be a fun ride. You’ll have an adventure and a great story to tell along with it! If you are unable to ride, you can still support us! Your donations will provide people who need end-of-life care but do not have insurance to cover it. Hospice care and support is not only for patients, but their families and loved ones as well. It is important to stop sometimes, in the mist of our hectic lives, to take stock - to really LOOK at those around us and allow ourselves time to simply enjoy life and be grateful for it all. It's also at these times that we can be acutely aware of the gaps in the world where our loved ones are missing. You may have arrived at this page because you've had this experience or you know someone who has. You have suffered the loss of an important person, and you "get it." We do not have to explain to you the need for hospice care, and why it's crucial at times like this. If you've been through it, you also know that one thing we gain through that journey is a heightened awareness of the value of love and time, and a great capacity for appreciating both. Hospice care is not about death, it's about life, and spending the moments we have together well. Please support my ride and help someone else to have moments like this. To register for the ride, contact Julie Griffin at jgriffin@hospiceathomecares.org or (800) 717-3811. “I have observed the stress on families, trying to provide care to their loved one without the financial resources to get them into a facility, or can’t care for them at home. My goal is to combine two things I love, to create a resource for those most in need so that they can have access to quality care regardless of ability to pay.” – Dawn Spoon
