Stuff About Me:

Dear Family, Friends, Neighbors & Co-Workers!

On April 18th, 2016, I will be running the Boston Marathon for the 2nd time. I’m running in memory of Dr. Charles McCabe and to support Mass General Hospital's Emergency Care, Disaster Relief & Disaster Preparedness programs.

Boston is a very special place to me for many reasons.  I spent an amazing 4 years at Boston College, and eventually moved back in 2001 to join the TJX organization as a buyer for Marshalls and TJ Maxx.  It is during this time that I was able to become very close with my husband's uncle CJ "Doc" McCabe and fully understand his love for - and dedication to - Emergency Medicine at MGH.  I am honored to be able to run "for him" and "with him”.

Sadly, early in Doc's career, he was stricken with MS and eventually succumbed to complications from Melanoma. Happily, however, I can say that he left an indelible and inspiring legacy not only at MGH, but also with everyone that ever came into contact with him.  Though his illness kept him from becoming the gifted surgeon he was destined to be, it landed him in an even more important role...that of Professor.  Doc's wisdom, teachings, and his words are forever passed on now in the academic world of medicine.  He continues to save lives on a daily basis through all those he taught, mentored, and inspired, many of whom are now fixtures at MGH.

So on April 18th 2016,  I will run for him. I will run with him, with the joy of running that he so fondly spoke of. I will run to honor what he loved so much.....his 2nd family.....Massachusetts General Hospital. I will run to help fund his department of Emergency Medicine.  I will run to raise money so that more lives are saved due to proper training and education of Emergency First Responders.  I WILL RUN!

The Faculty Prizes for Excellence in Teaching in Years III and IV are named in memory of Charles McCabe, M.D., who was a beloved teacher of Harvard medical students and who also served as the director of the Core Clerkship in Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital for more than two decades. Dr. McCabe was also a recipient of the Faculty Prize for Excellence in Teaching on multiple occasions for his teaching of third-year medical students.

Following the tragedy of the 2013 marathon bombings, Mass General was fortunate to receive 40 guaranteed entries from the Boston Athletic Association to create an Emergency Response Marathon Team.  For the second straight year, thanks to John Hancock, Mass General will have 40 spots for runners on the Emergency Response Marathon Team. The funds raised provide critical support for emergency care, disaster relief and disaster preparedness training at Mass General, efforts that benefit victims worldwide.

Team runners raise money to ensure that Mass General is ready for the next disaster – man-made or natural. Marathon funds support the training and resources needed to develop a carefully, integrated response that spans multiple departments throughout the hospital.

“There’s no room for error,” says David Brown, MD, chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Mass General. “Our performance must be flawless. As in football, if one player of the 11 on the field doesn’t do the job, the play fails.”

At Mass General, we take emergency planning very seriously. Preparing for the next disaster takes much training and practice. And donors are critical to our success. Time spent training is not covered by insurance and often takes place outside work hours. Money raised by the Mass General Emergency Response team allows Mass General to ready at a moment’s notice.
