One year ago, March 10, 2017, I lost one of my dearest friends, Eileen "Beanie" Moffa, to lung cancer. I'll never forget the day I got the call from our friend Wendy, when she told me about Bean's unexpected diagnosis. That was in October, 2016. And within 6 months, we lost her. I still have her last text messages to me and often reread her last "I love you." Losing Bean has changed my life and the lives of our friends. We now realize the true value and blessing of friendship. Before Bean passed, we created "Team Bean", wore our team shirts proudly, and hosted a fundraiser to help with the huge medical bills she had quickly accumulated. Family and friends joined in and she joined us via skype with her everlasting positive attitude and glowing smile. The bond between friends has grown ever stronger as the love and support we have shared in mourning the loss of our bright star. We cherish our memories with Bean, we continue to celebrate her birthday, her life, and the love she gave us all.
Bean never smoked. She was a healthy, beautiful woman full of love, energy, and joy. Cancer blindsided us and this horrible disease robbed us of her so quickly. I want to help others, help to save lives, and hope more birthdays are celebrated.
I'm not a runner. In fact, I'm a horrible runner and over the past couple of years, have spent more time as a work-aholic than staying fit. Sitting all day at a desk, sitting all evening on a laptop, and not a break in this Pittsburgh winter weather to get out to train, has not put me in much condition for this relay. However, I am determined - and proudly running for American Cancer Society DetermiNATION. I will be running with my fiance, Mark, another one of Bean's close friends, and my colleagues from California University of PA on our Relay team "Vulcan Flyers."
We miss Bean everyday and I will be running this relay in honor of her memory and for the strong, special, and amazing women, friend, mother, and grandmother that she was. Also, I will be running this relay and raising money to help those fighting Cancer and help them to conquer this battle. I hope you will help to support the fight against cancer.
