Hi, I am a high school teacher and have been a part of the Livonia Public Schools as either a student or as a staff member for the majority of my life. My students, staff and community are very important to me both personally and professionally.
Churchill High School, like many in other high schools in the nation, has a changing student population. In the past decade, as our numbers of students of color have increased dramatically, our staff and administrators have been faced with a deepening challenge of meeting the needs of each and every student. This endeavor and the diversity of student needs continue to grow. Working with students in an environment like this is an incredible opportunity for all students to learn about others and develop a cultural capital that will allow them to navigate between many groups and be highly successful in their higher education and places of work.
In an effort to make CHS a positive, productive, and safe environment for all students, our staff has developed an Anti-Racism Task Force. It is the goal of this task force to address issues of racism and systemic bias that impact our students and challenge them daily in the hallways and in their classrooms.
Beginning conversations about race and racism with staff, students, and parents can be difficult, and requires a great deal of sensitivity and training. In order to build these skills, I am hoping to attend a course put on by ERAC/Ce, They are an anti-racism organization in Kalamazoo, Michigan, whose mission is to de-institutionalize racism throughout a variety of systems. ERAC/Ce has developed a curriculum specifically for educators who are organizing anti-racist efforts in their buildings.
My hope, through this website, is to acquire the funds to attend this course. Tuition is $1800, and includes a rigorous 10-day curriculum that begins in August and runs throughout the fall semester.
I’m asking for your help. Racism affects all of us every day, though we are often unaware of its many impacts. It is my hope, that through hard work and outreach, we may begin to dismantle institutional racism not only at CHS, but throughout Livonia Public Schools.
