BENEFITING: MERCY CORPS
EVENT DATE: Mar 11, 2012
HOURS PLEDGED: 100
I wrote an original song (my first ever) and created a YouTube video fundraising campaign to raise money for Japan's recovery from the devastating effects of the tsunami in March 2011. As part of the first anniversary remembrances, I wanted to remind people of the terrible events of March 2011, to show the heartwarming response from nations across the globe, and to illustrate how far Japan still has to go.
This was the most expensive natural disaster in history, and no country can bear the cost alone. Nearly 20,000 people were killed, 400,000 were left homeless, and entire communities were wiped off the face of the Earth. Even one year later, although much of the debris is cleared, there are still 350,000 people living in temporary shelters; there are too few hospitals and clinics to serve the sick and too few schools to educate the children in devasteted areas. It could take a decade to rebuild what was lost, and much can never be recovered.
I wanted to use the occasion of the one-year anniversary to refocus attention on Japan -- even if only for a while -- as there are likely to be other remembrances occurring around this time. Please help me raise money to help the people who have lost so much and suffered for so long, to begin to rebuild their communities and their lives. All money goes directly to MercyCorp -- a top-rated Charity Navigator organization -- who has been on the ground since the beginning and continues with their Japanese partner organizations to work for long-term economic, social, and emotional recovery.
I hope you will watch my You Tube video (posted at left), and I would be honored if you would help me to spread it around the world by sending it to everyone you can -- via email, facebook, Twitter, etc. -- that's the "viral" part. Share, like, comment, and donate today!
