To make Trail Creek program, staffing & curriculum improvements and keep the registration cost as low as possible, we are seeking $15,000 to support the 2013/2014 fall Trail Creek programming. This funding will ensure that every sixth grade student can attend Trail Creek regardless of ability to pay. Nearly 850 sixth graders will be directly impacted this year by this funding

In the summer of 1973 several Coeur d'Alene 6th grade teachers got together with US Forest Service personnel to develop a plan for students to experience outdoor learning at an historic Civilian Conservation Corps Camp—the Magee Work Center—located at Trail Creek on the upper CdA River. A great deal of time and effort was expended at Magee developing learning stations and recreational facilities beneficial and enjoyable to students.

Lutherhaven's Shoshone Base Camp adopted the Trail Creek program in 1998. Changes in curriculum and increasing transportation expense shifted Trail Creek to Camp Lutherhaven in 2007. "Trail Creek" celebrates its fortieth anniversary this year. While the actual location has changed several times through the decades, the program continues to be an important part of Coeur d'Alene's sixth grade curriculum.

Since its start, over 50,000 students from Coeur d'Alene have enjoyed the Trail Creek adventure. For many of them, Trail Creek was the only camp experience of their lifetime. Ask anyone 43 or younger who attended 6th grade in Coeur d'Alene if they remember Trail Creek, and chances are likely they'll respond with a resounding YES!, a smile and a story about their experience.

Designed as an outdoor education, life skills and adventure program, Trail Creek happens during the fall of 6th grade. This is a new, scary, tumultuous time for many 6th graders as they grow from elementary to middle school, face the challenges of adolescence, and experience a new and different way of learning. Trail Creek gets them started on the right foot, launching their year with fun and excitement so they may face this next stage of their growing life with curiosity, confidence and enthusiasm.

The new Trail Creek model staffs the program with trained Lutherhaven personnel. High School volunteers and trained adult volunteers work with teachers and other faculty to facilitate all activities. Between teachers, camp staff, high school mentors and volunteers, 6th graders experience a winning combination of significant role models and skilled educators.

Program Objectives:
1. Help students develop their knowledge and skills in ways that add value to their learning in the classroom.
2. Empower children to be responsible citizens in handling our natural resources.
3. Develop interpersonal relationships by encouraging trust, communication, group cohesion, problem solving and teamwork.
4. Provide Hands-on, interactive math, science, history and literary lessons to enhance classroom learning objectives.
5. Engage students in Experiential Education activities to:
Build student self-esteem
Provide opportunities to take risk in healthy ways
Increase overall school health by improving school culture
Build relationships to reduce bullying and intimidation
Build leadership skills
