Streets and sidewalks constitute an overwhelming 80 percent of New York City's public space. Transportation Alternatives' mission is to reclaim that space for people, and to promote bicycling, walking and public transit. Founded in 1973 and now backed by over 160,000 supporters, TransAlt fights for safer, smarter transportation and a more sustainable city.
Some of our most visible achievements include: introducing parking-protected bike lanes, Citi Bike, Select Bus Service and automated speed enforcement cameras to New York City streets; pedestrian-friendly redesigns of Times Square, Herald Square and Union Square, in addition to dozens of smaller public plazas that together total over 40 acres of streets repurposed as public space; and the historic lowering of the citywide speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph – a difference that doubles a pedestrian’s chance of survival when struck by a vehicle.
