My name is Keith LaBorde, I'm a bike messenger here in DC and I love to cycle. I also love to travel and see the world. I don't have much but if I did, I would invest in the world. I would like to do my share in making our world just a little better, especially for children. My bike, like me, is a minimalist, it is a steel, one speed, fixed gear, well taken care of piece of equipment that I am proud of. The challenge I've set for myself is to ride this one gear bike across this beautiful country via route 66, albeit loosely at some points since it's now decommissioned.
This journey has seldom been attempted in this fashion, the plan is to ride 36 out of 40 days, leaving 4 days to rest. I will need to average almost 100 miles a day, sleep wherever, walk up mountains, try to eat 6,000 calories a day, and spin my pedals 1,000,000 times to make it to Los Angeles. I'm also going to be self filming the trip to show others the adventure.
On August 1st, 2014 I will set off from the Washington Monument in DC with the hopes that this won't just be a personal trip, but a substantial fundraiser for UNICEF. With your help, we can make this awesome feat of endurance, a real treat for the children who benefit from UNICEF.
