There's no getting around it: I am a cyclist at heart. Running is generally something I do when I 'run down' to the corner deli. But as a longstanding supporter of T.A. and the work they do to make NYC safer for everyone, I couldn't say no to the challenge of running much farther than I've ever run before. Doing research for my 2009 book 'Traffic,' which looked into the dynamics of the 'windshield view,' I began to take a much more active interest in the world of the built transportation environment that was around me. And I wasn't particularly happy with what I saw in NYC – that supposed 'walker's paradise,' in which pedestrians and other modes are still often given such short shrift. I was heartened by the passionate and innovative work that T.A. was doing — and I've been a member, a collaborator, a fellow traveler, ever since. I may blow up at mile 14 — or mile 4 — but I will go the distance, just as T.A. does in its unflagging quest to make the city that hosts the world's most famous marathon a better place to live.
Now here's T.A.'s spiel:
Transportation Alternatives has been New York City's #1 advocate for biking, walking, and public transit for 44 years. Our goal? To reclaim New York City streets from the car, and make streets safer, more sustainable, and more equitable for all.
Cyclists, runners, and street users from all walks of life make up our team - people just like you who run these city streets each and every day, who want better public space for everyone.
Some of our team members are running in honor of a friend or family member lost to traffic violence. This is an issue TransAlt is championing with our advocation for Vision Zero - the goal of eliminating death and serious injury as a result of car crashes from NYC by 2024.
Together with our members and partners, we have achieved so much, including the introduction of:
- Protected bike lanes
- Citi Bike bike share program
- Select bus service
- Pedestrian plazas and safety measures
- Life saving 25 MPH speed limit
- Vision Zero program
- Speed safety cameras
- and much more to our beautiful city.
We are so grateful to all of our many stakeholders and members that have helped us succeed and make NYC an even greater place.
If you want to make a difference too, please consider donating to one of our team members campaigns!
And, if you donate $50 or more, you will get a year long membership to TransAlt in return, not to mention, safer city streets for all.
