In November of 2017, I will be running my first NYC marathon and I will be doing so in honor of my dear friend, Dan Hanegby. Although running the NYC marathon has been a dream of mine for quite some time, I struggled to find that boost of courage and determination necessary to take on the challenge.
Dan Hanegby is my courage.
Dan perished on June 12, 2017, after he was struck by a bus while riding a CitiBike to work. Words cannot adequately describe the depth of his death's tragedy. Dan was an amazing person, a successful banker, an avid cyclist and runner (who ran several NYC marathons), a wonderful friend, a loving husband, and a devoted father to two beautiful children.
Dan and I grew up together in Israel, where we both played tennis professionally. In 2003, we both came to the United States on athletic scholarships to play for Division I tennis teams. Together with my friend Harel, another one of Dan's childhood friends, I run in Dan's honor and to raise money for Transportation Alternatives, Inc., a charity with a mission close to Dan's heart -- to reclaim New York City's streets from the automobile and to promote safe bicycling, walking and public transit. TransAlt advocates to improve and install infrastructure that reduces speeding and traffic crashes, saves lives and improves everyday transportation for all New Yorkers. The goal is to achieve Vision Zero -- the elimination of traffic deaths and serious injuries on New York City's streets.
