Transportation to and from Prekindergarten
Organized by: Gilda Duplessis Toledano
Research shows children of low income benefit from high quality prekindergarten programs. Children who attend such programs are more likely to stay on tract to meet goals and objectives for kindergarten when they enter kindergarten with a good academic foundation. Louisiana provides many free seats for PK4 but there is no provision for transportation. Three of the children who are currently enrolled in our PK Program at Gilda's Preschool Academy lack transportation to and from school which results in many absent days. The mothers of the children depend on the grandparents to use public transportation for arrival and pickup, while the mothers also rely on public transportation to get to their jobs. Transportation creates a hardship for the family because of the costs and the inconsistency of buses arriving at their stops at the scheduled times. Weekly private transportation is $55.00 and a good solution to have the children picked up and returned home. I believe that is the best solution to ensure the children's regular presence to build on social emotional interactions as well as meet academic goals and objectives to be ready to enter kindergarten in the Fall. We are asking for your assistance to help us help our children.
