EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 20, 2015
There's only one Boston.
Nearly 20 years ago, Travis graduated from Tabor Academy and moved to Boston to begin his freshman year at Boston University. He suffered a devastating injury 11 seconds into his first shift on the BU hockey team that left him paralyzed. He persevered, went back to get his degree, and graduated from BU on time. He started the Travis Roy Foundation, became a motivational speaker, and has raised over 5 million dollars for spinal cord injury research and individual grants for paraplegics and quadriplegics.
Nearly five years ago, I graduated from Tabor Academy and moved to Boston to begin my freshman year at Boston College. Since then, Boston has become my home. I fell in love with BC, took a variety of classes, gave a handful of campus tours, cheered at nearly every football and hockey game, and met lifelong friends. I spent 3 years cheering for the runners on Marathon Monday and 1 year running it myself. When I think about my new home, I think about the amazing community here and the people who have helped me accomplish so many of my goals.
I am so lucky that our paths have crossed.
Travis is my biggest inspiration. He has taught me the importance of setting goals, working hard, and taking on every challenge that comes our way. He has showed me how a positive attitude and great sense of humor can turn any day around. He is the reason I get out of bed on Saturday mornings to join the Charity Teams group on our long, snowy, Boston runs.
I am beyond grateful for this chance to run the Boston Marathon for my friend Travis, to finish the race that I started in 2013, and to further the mission of the Travis Roy Foundation.
Thank you all for the continued support!
TRAVIS ROY FOUNDATION wrote -
The Travis Roy Foundation was established in 1997 to fund research and help spinal cord injury survivors by providing adaptive equipment. Inspired by Travis’ own story, the lifeblood of the Travis Roy Foundation has been the generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations across North America. This generosity has made an immediate impact on the lives of many individuals.
IT’S ABOUT INDEPENDENCE.
It’s amazing how the little things in life are so precious when they are not so easy to accomplish. When you have a spinal cord injury, it has an impact on every aspect of your life – from your emotions to your finances. A portion of the money raised by the Travis Roy Foundation goes toward individual grant funds to purchase adaptive equipment to help paraplegics and quadriplegics live their lives.
For someone with a spinal cord injury, having the right wheelchair can mean the difference between feeling helplessly insufficient and being independent. You’re not just helping the recipient. You also relieve some of the physical and emotional strain on family and friends.
IT’S ABOUT HOPE.
It is the wish of every paralyzed person that one day their wheelchair will no longer be needed. The Travis Roy Foundation has awarded more than a million dollars in research grants. For researchers and scientists the most important question is basic: How can an injured spinal cord be regenerated? Researchers are working tirelessly to determine how cells in the central nervous system communicate with one another, but the research is expensive and a cure is likely still years away. The more money we raise, the sooner a cure will be found.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE YOU WILL MAKE.
Donations of all sizes have an impact – every penny you donate will help the Travis Roy Foundation do its work.
