Travis’ goal is to create a non-profit so that he can bring people into his homeland, Canyon de Chelly. We’ve led Lead Feather journeys into the canyon with Travis and his family since 2009 and it’s an incredibly gorgeous and spiritual place. Up until now Travis has been able to bring people into the canyon on his own, without needing to have an official organization. He has brought groups of Dineh school children there, most of whom have never been to the canyon, even though it’s the spiritual center of their reservation. Going forward, though, the Navajo Nation has said that in order for Travis to bring people into the canyon, he’ll need a guiding license…even to bring in Dineh schoolchildren. As strong as Travis’ family support is, this year has been tough for them. His position as a traditional counselor was cut from the local high school, despite parents’ attempts to get the school board to keep it, so he has been out of a job since the summer. Money is tight. It will cost him $1,500 to apply for his guiding license. Although that may not sound like an overwhelming amount of money to start a non-profit, for him it’s out of reach this year. My goal – and what I’d like to ask you each to join in with me – is to raise that money for him. I believe it’s one of the best investments any of us can make, since it will enable Travis to help these schoolchildren see themselves as worthy, as part of something larger than themselves, as connected to the earth…in ways that can help sustain them through the difficult times that will no doubt come. Together we can literally improve the lives of hundreds if not thousands of Dineh kids with whom Travis will work in the coming years. What could be more amazing than that?!
