AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF ZOO KEEPERS wrote -Trekking for Rhinos will raise funds for projects that can help ensure the future for rhinos. It will build upon the success of Bowling for Rhinos, an initiative of the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) that has raised $5 million since its inception, and recently surpassed its annual goal of $500,000. Like bowling, trekking or hiking is an activity in which anyone can participate. I intend to hike at least 2015 miles for rhino conservation in 2015. Included among my list of destinations are portions of the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail, as well as a number of our country’s national parks, wildlife refuges, sanctuaries and state parks, all of which contribute to the preservation of wilderness and serve as symbols for wildlife conservation. Along the way, I’ll share my experiences, as well as rhino facts, history and trivia, through various media. Throughout the adventure, I’ll stress the importance of rhinos as flagship species for conservation because, simply stated, if we’re successful at saving rhinos, hundreds of other threatened species will benefit, too.
