Our next upcoming race: May 25, 2015 Lifetime Fitness Cap Tex Tri Austin, Texas
...Be inspired to make a difference, it all starts with the first step.
Finisher of The Cap Tex Tri in Austin Texas marked our first race of this journey on May 26, 2014.
Sophia and her dad have had many bikes and runs to think about this. This is a really important matter to us when we realize...
- how unequal the amount of provision, resources, and living standards are in this world,
- exercise, health and nutrition is really important for many reasons,
- that life is not just all about us.
...these are just some of the thoughts that help us keep going...
Therefore, we aim to complete an endurance distance triathlon on a different continent every year to help raise money to provide aid and support to others.
What about Antarctica? The world is a really large place and we imagine there are better places to run or even do a triathlon than on Antarctica. Plus we think it would be really really cold to swim there. Is it possible to even bike in the snow?
As the journey progresses, other race locations will be announced.
So how did this all start? 2007…at the age of five, our daughter Sophia sold ice cream to benefit those in need…she gathered together her neighborhood friends, family, and sponsors to raise enough money to load a Mobile Loaves and Fishes truck to benefit approximately 100 men, women, and children in Austin, Texas. She continued to hold such events annually for several years and is the original inspiration for all of this.
What does Ice Cream have to do with Triathlons? Sophia, her dad and family simply like to eat ice cream, especially after long workouts. So ice cream really has nothing to do with triathlons, but tastes really good and was connected with the initial desire to help people in one way or another.
How did Sophia get into triathlons? Sophia's dad has participated in the sport of triathlon since 1997. So around the age of 5, Sophia began to follow her dad as he trained for various races. The Hill Country Triathlon Club in Kyle, Texas hosts races for kids. So she started perfecting her swim as she was cheered to swim her first 25 yards, bike on her training wheels, and run ½ a mile.
Perhaps some of that ice cream helped with the training? Actually we used a training program. We tried to stick to most of the training schedule, but some days were easier than others.
How can you get involved? We have to believe that doing something as crazy as this, may get some people to think about their own lives.
We are willing to guess that each and every one of you reading this have a race to run in this thing called life. And if you don't, we can find one for you.
If you are inspired, donate, join our team, run your own race whatever that may be so we can all make a difference. You can do bake sales, other fundraisers, create a team, share this link.
You don't have to do a race in Antarctica, it can be around the track, around the block, or across the country. Whatever that race may be is up to you.
Be inspired to make a difference, it all starts with the first step.
Seriously...where is the money going? OK, we did some serious digging around and these are the causes that we plan to support.
There are Three just like the stages of a Triathlon
Up to 80% of funds raised will provide aid and support at this time to the following:
SWIM 1500m (1600 yards)
[The Pure Joy Foundation]: We are not kidding, this is one of the poorest places in the world. Donations will go toward self sustaining programs that provide clean water, improved healthcare and educational opportunities for the next generation of South Sudanese.
BIKE 40 km (24.9 Miles)
The Church of Acts in Elsa, Texas see [VIDEO]. We had the pleasure of serving the community here and testify that this operation is making a serious difference in the hearts and minds of those around them. Donations will go toward the children and youth programs at this location.
RUN 10 km (6.2 Miles)
[Sports Matter] Billions of dollars in funding cuts are reducing access to youth sports. Something we all take for granted – that every young person has the opportunity to benefit from sports – is at risk. Your donations will go toward a well organized foundation that knows about the world of youth sports better than we do.
Remaining funds will support generating additional awareness, training, equipment, race fees, travel, and other directly related expenses. I am fairly certain that we have covered what that all will do.
We really like the following verse.
...And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us... (Hebrews 12:1) NIV
"We believe the angels, heaven and God almighty are cheering us on and that can really help because...seriously we need all the encouragement we can get."
We really like the sport of triathlons and we think this video is awesome!
