I made a promise to Hazel last year, back when she was about 6 months old. Hanging out together watching the ceiling fan go round and round, I told her that I would get in shape soon and be a better model of health for her as soon as time allowed. After a period of turning every aspect of our lives upside down and shaking it out for spare change, stability and routine has somewhat set in (as much as it can with a toddler running around). Finally, some time has opened up for me to make good on that promise a year ago and with Kelly's blessing, I decided to sign up for an off-road triathlon. I am currently deep into training with the most difficult training stretch coming up and the race happening in 4 weeks. But there is something else that prompts me to reach out today.
We want to instill a sense of charitable values in Hazel as she grows up. With that in mind, I am racing for a charitable cause and am humbly asking for your support. Kelly and I are extremely grateful for the existence of the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Rochester for personal reasons. They provided us with a retreat very close to Hazel while she was in the hospital recovering from open heart surgery. We had a clean bed, food, and a hot shower waiting for us 24 hours a day during an incredibly difficult time in a place far from friends and family. And the amazing part? All of these services were free of charge and they thought of basically everything we needed before we even knew we needed it. To top it off, RMHC of Rochester receives a 95/100 score on CharityNavigator.org and equally high scores on other websites that evaluate charities' effectiveness at using fundraising dollars. They make good use of every dollar that is donated and it shines through on every level.
I've set up a page on CrowdRise.com. Your donation to RMHC of Rochester (a US-Based 501(c)3 charitable organization) through CrowdRise is 100% tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. You'll automatically receive an email receipt that meets the IRS requirements for a record of your donation. The money you donate is automatically sent to the RMHC of Rochester. The Syracuse Xterra Triathlon is on Sunday August 14th. It's a 1km swim, 20km mountain bike, 10km trail run in Green Lakes State Park. Updates to come on the CrowdRise page with final results posted - if I'm still alive! Thank you all for your time and consideration.
