BENEFITING: MIL MILAGROS INC
Over the next eight weeks I am participating in two olympic level triathlons to raise much needed funding for Mil Milagros (www.milmilagros.org), an amazing charity that is modelling a unique, respectful partnership with families to ensure that some of the world's most impoverished children have the opportunity to thrive. Mil Milagros's vision is breathtaking: to ensure that all children in Guatemala graduate from sixth grade literate, healthy, and prepared to succeed. Quite an ambitious challenge in a country which boasts the 4th highest level of malnutrition in the world, and in which only 40% of children graduate primary school (aka our "elementary" school level).
Mil Milagros's unique approach - to focus on building the capacity of mothers and communities to support the needs of children - is paying off. MM has trained more than 550 mothers to work with 1,000+ children/day. Since 2010, 96% of MM 6th graders have graduated, there have been substantial reductions in chid malnutrition, and significant improvements in children's health and hygiene (including dental care and lice treatments).
Please join me in supporting this superbly managed organization - whose impact could ultimately extend far beyond Guatemala to other developing countries. The two triathlons I will compete in are the August 24 Cranberry Classic Olympic (.9 mile swim, 26.2 bike, 6.2 run) and the September 28 Pilgrimman (.9 mile swim, 28.8 bike, 6.6 run). Funding will be used for MM's core nutrition, health and hygiene, and education programs.
