BENEFITING: HOPE ARISING INC
EVENT DATE: Nov 15, 2015
Imagine waking up every day only wondering where and how you were going to get water and food to survive the day. Imagine only owning one pair of clothing that you wear everyday for years until it is torn to pieces. Take a shower? You don't even know what that means because water is so precious it is only used to sustain life. This is how life is in Dera, Ethiopia. Hope Arising is a non-profit organization that provides a way for citizens of Dera to gain access to a number of things like water, basic healthcare, and micro-loans to allow children to attend school and adults to develop a means of living. Being a dentist, I went to Dera in October 2014 with Hope Arising to help provide basic dental needs to this village. The needs are so great that we were only able to focus our attention on people with life-threatening infections and excruciating pain. The needs are endless. I felt guilty just knowing that the worn-out shoes I decided to take there instead of throwing out could literally change someone's life. I felt guilty knowing that the spare-change I had in my bag was enough to pay for someones education and change their life forever. It is humanly impossible to go to this village and not want to do more. It is humanly impossible to go to this village and not need to do more. I am training for and competing in Ironman Tempe 2015. I won't be able to make the trip to Ethiopia this year, but that doesn't mean I can't raise enough money through this process to make a huge impact in the village. Besides, Ethiopians are always some of the best long-distance runners in the world! I will need all the Karma I can get during my ironman run!
