TN is a really rare and extremely painful neurological condition which causes stabbing electrical pains in the face. Though there are treatments for it, the results are mixed. My wife Michelle was diagnosed with TN shortly after we were married and after several years of medications which brought on various side effects such as hallucinations, hair loss and weight loss, she had her first stereotactic brain surgery in 2003 and a second one in 2004. She never really got much relief from any of these treatments, however, and even though the disease is not considered fatal she died in 2008 from an adverse reaction between her pain medication and a new drug which they put her on.
This disease affects 1 in about 80,000 people so it gets little attention and is very much misunderstood by a lot of people as they can't understand the pain aspect of TN. In the past Dr.'s used to refer to it as "The Suicide Disease".
Someday there will be better treatments for this affliction.
