Saving Little Lives

Our mission is to advocate humane treatment of animals, reunite lost pets with their owners, provide protection, care and shelter for abandoned and homeless companion animals, and educate the public about proper and responsible animal care.

The Tri-Lakes Humane Society, Inc. is located in beautiful Saranac Lake, NY, in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains. We provide shelter for all stray, abandoned, homeless and unwanted companion and domestic animals. We also work towards educating the public about proper animal care, including providing adequate housing, food/water, veterinary care, spaying/neutering, and the many NYS and local laws pertaining to animals that owners need to be aware of and abide by.

The Tri-Lakes Humane Society was incorporated in 1975, and is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. Our Humane Society became a No-Kill facility in 1998. We provide shelter for approximately 350-400 animals each year, and have placed over 3,000 animals into new homes and reunited over 1000 animals with their owners since 2001 (when animal statistics were started).

Our day to day goal is to provide the best temporary home and compassionate care for animals in our shelter until they are adopted into new homes or claimed by an owner. Our Humane Society employs 4 full-time Kennel Technicians that provide excellent and compassionate care to all of the shelter animals each day. Our Shelter Manager/Animal Control Officer is on call 24/7 for animal emergencies and assisting with local Law Enforcement for 4 Townships and the Village of Saranac Lake.

We encourage members of our community to Volunteer at our facility and assist us with providing extra attention, care and exercise for the shelter animals. Many of our Volunteers are able to visit once a week, and spend time walking the shelter dogs, playing and socializing with the cats, and helping the Shelter Staff with a variety of cleaning tasks. Volunteers also help out at our Fundraising and Adoption Events. If you love animals, volunteering is a great way to spend your free time giving back to help homeless dogs, cats and small animals.

Our Humane Society has a Spay/Neuter Assistance Program that is set up to help low income pet owners afford the cost of this important surgery. We provide financial aid vouchers, which are accepted at 14 area Veterinary Hospitals and Clinics throughout Franklin, Essex and Clinton Counties in Northern NY State. Each year we mail financial aid vouchers to over 300 pet owners, and the impact is being seen in our facility as fewer unwanted litters of puppies and kittens are being brought to us. Our efforts to help pet owners through this program has decreased our annual intake numbers. It is a win-win for animals and humans alike!
