BENEFITING: The Breast Cancer Research Foundation
In honor of my Mom, Jo Anne W. Lupher, we're raising money to fund breast cancer research; in particular, the kind my Mom is fighting... "triple positive." Our goal: $3,036 by Mom's birthday, October 21st.
What's "triple positive"? It means the cancer grows in response to the hormone estrogen and the hormone progesterone. In addition, the cancer cells make too much of a protein known as HER2/neu. WebMD explains it pretty well: http://www.webmd.com/breast-cancer/breast-cancer-types-er-positive-her2-positive
WebMD says that about 20% to 25% of breast cancers are Her2 positive and that these cancers tend to be much more aggressive and fast-growing.
Mom's story: Last fall, Mom had a radical right mastectomy. She has now completed 6 chemotherapy treatments and 6 weeks of radiation (as of last Friday!). Way to go Mom!!! Let's just say... bald is beautiful! She will also continue Herceptin infusions every 3 weeks through most of 2012. Mom and Dad live in Challis, Idaho. A town of just 900 people; 4 hours and a few mountain passes away from Mountain States Tumor Institute in Boise. For each treatment, Mom made the trek over the mountains, through the avalanche zone, along three winding rivers, and past many deer and elk. What a trooper... she keeps saying, "she's just doing her time."
There's a sign in Mom's kitchen that reads, "If Momma ain't happy, nobody's happy." We're trying, Mom, and I know the Breast Cancer Rearch Foundation is trying really hard, too!
Love to Mom!
