Triscuits Emergency Surgery
Organized by: Justin Mautino
I want you to meet Triscuit! This little girl was abandoned as a puppy and found by the dog shelter in Athens, Ohio. She is an eight-week-old Australian shepherd-Black Lab mix. You would never guess it by her loving and outgoing personality but little Triscuit was found with a broken back left femur. When I adopted Triscuit a few days ago the vet who initially saw her from the shelter believed that the break was minor and because she was a shelter dog it would just heal on its own so he decided to do nothing for the break because of her homeless status (meaning he would receive no money for his services). He believed she would acquire some function of her leg by letting it heal on its own. I took Triscuit to our vet from my hometown; the vet that we have trusted with all of our dogs in the past, and found out that the break was much more serious than originally believed. She had suffered a mid shaft femur break totally displacing the bone, which now needed to be aligned immediately. Upon seeing the x-rays the vet explained that Triscuit needed surgery in order to make a full recovery and get full function of her leg back. She could not believe how bad the break was & that they did not do the surgery needed. In addition, no pain medication was given to her. She prescribed the pain meds & referred us to a surgical consult, which we saw the same day. The surgical consult told us that Triscuit will require a permanent plate & this needed to be done asap. They kept her right after her appt so the surgery could be done the next day. The cost of this entire process is about $4,000, this includes the surgery, the cost of the plate, pain medication, X-rays, etc. Triscuit is scheduled for emergency surgery on March 18th in order to ensure a full recovery of her leg. All of the money will go towards Triscuit’s medical bills. I am a college student and I am unable to pay for all of this on my own. My family is willing to help, but cannot cover theses expenses. Triscuit is the sweetest dog & is only 8 weeks old. She has been so playful and loving throughout this entire process, which ceases to amaze me. I want to be able to give her the quality of life she deserves. With this surgery she will have the opportunity to live a normal life, with nothing holding her back, she is still so young and is already a fighter, she deserves this chance. PLEASE consider helping Triscuit, every dime matters. She is such a happy puppy, I can't imagine how unbelievable and amazing she will be when she is no longer in pain. She is already so loved and deserves this chance! I truly appreciate any help at all; it means the world to Triscuit and myself. All the proceeds will go directly to her surgery and recovery. Any money leftover due to changes in costs will be donated to the Athens County Dog Shelter where Triscuit was adopted! Thank you all for your help! And thanks to the shelter that rescued her!
