BENEFITING: ST LOUIS ORGANIZATION FOR CHANGING MEN INC
EVENT DATE: Oct 27, 2013
In October, I'm running the St. Louis Rock’n’Roll Half-Marathon (my first half-marathon) to support the work of RAVEN Non-Violence Education in ending domestic abuse and violence. Domestic violence impacts more than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men in the United States. Children who have witnessed domestic violence face a higher risk of developing anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and other long-term issues, including future perpetration or experience of domestic violence, than children who have not witnessed violence at home. The movement to intervene in domestic violence requires the collective efforts of the community.
As the third oldest program of its kind in the country, RAVEN Non-Violence Education provides a Batterer Intervention Program for adult men and Violence Prevention Programs for youth. I have volunteered at RAVEN for the past three years. Observing the tremendous progresses made by program participants have taught me the importance of engaging men and youth in our movement to end domestic violence.
A participant who recently completed the RAVEN program described the organization as "life-changing." He reflected on the difference that non-violence education has made in his future and relationships: “The outcome of my life circumstances is drastically different when I can take a deep breath, think, and share what I feel in a non-abusive way.”
