How many lives could have been saved if more people around us became organ donors? The number is shocking. Every year, there are about 30,000 people saved from organ transplant. However, there are still more than 125,000 people waiting for organ transplant. Most of them cannot be saved because of the severe shortage in organ supply.
Every 10 mins, someone is added to the waiting list for organ transplant. In the past 10 years, the waiting list has grown by 50%, but the number of organ recipients remains almost flat . The simple truth is that the number of people who need organs grows way faster than the number of organ donors.
Everyone in the waiting list represents someone who is important to someone else—a mom, a dad, a brother, a sister, or a child—maybe even you. Think about all these people who love each other and all the memories they could have created altogether. That’s way more than just a number.
The good news is that there is a way for everyone of us to help—that is to raise people's awareness. Today, only 38% of people in US are organ donors. We can certainly make a difference, if there are more organ donors around us.
Driven by this simple value, we are a group of runners, who will run "The Golden Gate Relay" to spread this value and help save lives. We are also all organ donors ourselves. We believe that lives are a gift to pass on; duration is not how we measure our lives, donation is.
Now there is a way for you to help, too. "Organs 'R' Us (ORU)” is a charity that promotes organ donation through athletics. Founded in 1996, it has raised over $25 million for people who need it to save their lives. If you want to be part of it and make a difference, please make an online donation. Any amount will do, and all donation will go straight to ORU.
Thanks in advance for your support of 125,000 Americans waiting for organ transplants.
More about the "The Golden Gate Relay”:
From April 30 to May 1, 2016, we will be running "The Golden Gate Relay" to fundraise for "Organs 'R' Us (ORU)". Our team of 12 runners will be running 191 miles from Napa to Santa Cruz through 36 cities and across the Golden Gate Bridge at midnight in support of ORU and 125,000 Americans waiting for Organ donors.
Our team consists of runners of all levels, from veterans to rookies, and most will run the Relay the first time. During the Relay, each member will run 3 legs in total passing button to teammates along the 191 miles expedition to symbolize the transfer of an organ from donor to recipient to save lives. We will sleep in sleeping bag on the floor in a church at April 30th night.
