March 2016: Genesys UX Team Day Activity
November 15, 2017
BENEFITING: Good Shepherd Ministries
Good Shepherd is a homeless shelter that takes in guests on a daily basis, providing them a bed to sleep in, lockers for their stuff, facilities and hygiene supplies to wash themselves, and hot meals to fill up their bellies. I came across this charity in March 2016, when we decided to do a volunteer activity at work for our team day. We spent a couple of hours preparing beds for that night’s residents: tucking in sheets, folding blankets and fluffing up pillows. Though unable to help, we were also shown around their soup kitchen, which provides meals not just for their daily residents, but for anyone who lines up at their door. Not one person is turned away from a meal.
I've seen how this charity operates with my own eyes. More than providing a space for the homeless, they strive to restore human dignity by treating their residents with respect and building a community; and so for this Christmas season, I have decided to waive my share of Christmas presents. Instead, I’m asking you to help me raise money for the Good Shepherd Ministries in Downtown Toronto. With the real estate market rising, and winter temperatures plunging, it’s heartbreaking to think that more and more people are pushed out on the streets, struggling to even have the most basic human necessities for survival.
