BENEFITING: Tropical Grazing Institute Inc
Tropical Grazing Institute aims to do three things: First, we want to identify the tropical cover crop species that work most effectively with organic no-till equipment and practices. The ideal tropical cover crop will fix nitrogen in the soil for the desired plant to utilize. It will grow uniformly so that it lays in one direction when rolled. It will be easily killed by the roller-crimper. And it will provide a sufficiently thick mat or mulch to protect the soil and shade out weed germination. Second, Tropical Grazing Institute will develop the most efficient practices for using organic no-till equipment in tropical climates. This includes how best to configure and weight the equipment so that it can work in the heavy clay soils, particularly during rainy and/or dry season conditions. We will determine optimal schedules for planting cover crops, rolling the cover crop, and when to plant the desired crop or grass. Third, we aim to successfully demonstrate how to use organic no-till equipment and practices to agricultural producers and livestock graziers in tropical climates. The objective is to help break their dependence on dangerous herbicides, protect and improve soil quality, improve productivity and quality of forage crops, and improve the livelihood of disadvantage farmers by cutting their expenditures on agricultural chemicals and realizing premium prices for organic produce. We will host educational seminars to demonstrate the practices and results, and use the equipment to help them adopt similar practices on their properties. Once a demand is created for organic no-till in Costa Rica, Tropical Grazing Institute can offer planting services with this organic no-till equipment for revenue, which can be used to further our non-profit activities.
