Truckin' for Children

The number of kids that go to sleep hungry at night are in the thousands. Despite the many resources already available through schools and other programs, kids still go to sleep with their bellies empty. When school is out, the numbers increase. Participation in programs over the summer is low in some communities because of access, or kids can't get to the sites due to lack of transportation where food is offered. After visiting one of the centers in Central Florida that feeds some of our community's hungry children, I learned that a majority of the meals served at the centers are cold ones, participation is lower than it could/should be, and that a hot meal that tastes good means more to these kids than most of us will ever understand. Since I had just recently done a story on food trucks, a light bulb went off - how could we utilize our area food trucks to get good, hot food to these kids? Would the food truck’s participation possibly also have a positive impact on the kid’s participation? And even bigger picture, how could we put a program in place that could be easily executed in any community with hungry kids, food trucks, and some volunteers.

We will work with the food trucks to create menus that are healthy and within a limited budget that the trucks could prepare and deliver to the sites. Their participation is two-fold: help us get hot, healthy food to kids in need and help increase participation with the excitement of the food truck coming out. We’ve already put in place some volunteer networks with the local colleges and have started sharing it with Kiwanis groups in the area. Now we need some funding to pay for the food and gas for these food trucks and for background checks on our volunteers. Please join us with a financial donation and/or a donation of your time as a volunteer. The money raised will pay for approximately 150 meals to be made and delivered twice a week, to two locations identified as high-need areas during the 10 summer weeks the kids are home from school. It will also cover the cost of the gas for the food trucks taking this food to these areas. Lastly, because we want the children to be protected, funds collected will also pay for background checks of our volunteers.
